Arsenal: Civil War could give Marvel Studios a run

“Hello, my name is ______ and I am neither an ‘In Wenger We Trust’ supporter, nor am I a passenger on the ‘Wenger Out Bandwagon’. [Wipes forehead] Wow, that was a huge load off. Its, been some weeks now since I’ve decided not to pick a side, and I tell you what, my life has become less clouded and less complicated [gasps erupt around the room]. I know most of you are shocked, don’t get me wrong, I have been tempted to choose a side, I have. I mean, the peer pressure, the, the herd-like mentality on social media, who wouldn’t want to be part of all that? It is with a heavy heart that I’ve come to a decision not to conform, but this does not mean that I am any less of an Arsenal fan; quite the contrary in fact. Please respect my resolve not to belong to either the ‘In Wenger We Trust’ or the ‘Wenger Out Bandwagon’; my support resides solely with Arsenal Football club. Thank you.”

All jokes aside, there is some truth in that scripted anecdotal speech. If you are an Arsenal fan who hasn’t taken residence under a rock this season, then you should be privy to the fact that a perfectly drawn line currently divides your club; a line that has given birth to a civil war, with no prizes at the end for the victor. This battle I speak of is the clash between two cults, the ‘Wenger Out Bandwagon’ and the ‘In Wenger We Trust’ supporters, and they have chosen social media platforms as their gruelling battleground. So get your keyboards ready… “En garde!”

If you care to admit that your life has been heavily consumed by the various mediums of the social media, then they’d have you, Arsenal fans, believing that its imperative to stand with a side, like we actually lived in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That Black Panther was impressive wasn’t he? And did you see how they finally nailed Spider-Man’s role?

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m here to inform you today, that there is a third side to this futile battle that you can choose from, and that is not picking a side at all. I’ll wait for you guys to pick your jaws up from the floor… Did you know that you can still remain a loyal Arsenal fan, even if you choose not to be an ‘In Wenger We Trust’ supporter, nor a passenger on the ‘Wenger Out Bandwagon’? No? Good thing for my arrival then.

I get it, honestly I do. Arsenal’s season has, well, not gone according to plan. Look, all those years of Arsene Wenger profusely stating that its been hard for his teams to compete with the financial superpowers of the league, whilst paying off debts for Emirates Stadium – you know, all that financial mumbo jumbo – has now been rendered void, because of Leicester City’s happily-ever after narrative with the title. Cue the photoshopped image of Michael Jordan crying meme on Wenger’s face. Some may argue that Leicester’s ascendance to glory was unprecedented, a fluke, whereas, some may argue that they were simply the best team this season. If this article has taught you anything, it’s ok to accept or reject these notions.

Does Wenger deserve blame for this season’s failings? Is everyone else affiliated with the club absolved from partial blame? Was Arsene out of bounds in dishing out blame to the fans that pay money to watch their beloved club? Yes, no and yes. Hands up if you got 3 out of 3.

Wenger has failed to get his players up for the games that mattered most, the players have failed to buy into the manager’s ideologies, and thus have under performed, and finally the fans have provided a toxic atmosphere for the team to play under. There’s this cool new technology called a 3D printer, use it to print out a physical manifestation of blame and pass it out to everyone affiliated at the club. Everyone has played a part in this dismal Arsenal season, but Wenger, the man at the helm of this ship will undoubtedly take the lion’s share of the blame, and rightly so.

So what am I trying to say? I was at the Norwich game a couple weeks ago, where the rivalry between ‘In Wenger We Trust’ and ‘Wenger Out Bandwagon’ was supposed to be at its boiling point. If anything it was a lukewarm display of silent moaning. However, what was clear is that some bellowed out their love for Wenger, some jeered their disdain for him, and some just sat there, indifferent to the whole occasion. Respect the people’s decision to conform, and respect the other people’s right not to conform. It is not by force to pick a side. So I sarcastically ask you…

Who do you stand with?
