Wenger Isn't Good Enough
Wenger isn't good enough; to lead us to the title, to sign world class players, to dance professionally, to replenish dwindling world fish supplies, to bring peace to the Middle East, to make cold fusion work.
Sometimes it just feels like no matter what Wenger does he will never be good enough for some. It might be healthier if they were to admit their distaste for the man rather than hide behind straw men. They ironically pine for the sort of success they were not used to before he came. Of course, he's not infallible and his word isn't canon. He makes mistakes like any human.
As the great Albus Dumbledore once said:
I make mistakes like the next man. In fact, being--forgive me--rather cleverer than most men, my mistakes tend to be correspondingly huger.
Like almost every summer of the past decade people are once more complaining about a lack of a "plan" from the manager - especially compared to his counterparts at other clubs like Louis van Gaal who clearly has a plan because he is signing players said complainers quite fancy themselves.
How can we possibly know what plan he has or hasn't got for Arsenal? Just because he doesn't share his plan with us doesn't mean it doesn't exist. He has vaguely hinted at buying players if the right ones become available but has also said he is happy with his squad. This, of course, causes great angst to people who ironically canonise words that suit their agenda. What is he supposed to say? "My squad isn't good enough without additions"? What message does that send?
Then there is this whole ridiculous argument of "dithering". What actual evidence of this do we have apart from speculative tweets and newspaper articles? If Wenger was on trial for not buying a player before another club does (which I'm sure some would like to be made a crime) and the Prosecution said "John Cross reported Wenger bid half what Manchester United did for Schneiderlin" or "Henry Winter said Wenger didn't want to buy anyone because Arteta was fit" they'd be laughed out of court because it isn't evidence. It's a theory at best.

Why do people waste so much time getting angry over what Wenger is or isn't doing when they have absolutely no clue whatsoever? Remember last summer when people lost their shit over Wenger "lazing away on the beach whilst other clubs made signings"? What did he do? He signed the perfect replacement for Sagna, he signed a promising young English player, a new goalkeeper (who actually performed quite well despite his lack of admirers in the stands) and, to give him his full name, 'Holy crap it's Alexis Sanchez'.
Wenger knows better than us all that getting players in before preseason is the best thing to do but he also knows better than all of us what is needed in the the squad and who is available, and more crucially - when.
He keeps his cards close to his chest and more often than not we benefit from it. He isn't shy of spending like some incessantly spout. He has spent close to £150m on 8 players in the past 2 years. Would you prefer he swapped those players for the ones Liverpool and Spurs got for similar amounts?
It is a risk holding out for a better class of player than the bang average players a small minority pine over but is it not a risk worth taking? If he has a 50/50 chance of signing Benzema on deadline day or could pay Benteke's £32m buyout clause in preseason what would you rather him do? Buy the inferior player for big money or take a chance on maybe being able to sign a world class player? I know what I would want and ironically (that word has been used a lot) taking the risk on ending up with nothing whilst going for a truly class player is considered "accepting mediocrity".
What people are getting mad about is being in the dark on things they have no business knowing before the time is right. They're mad that Wenger isn't doing a Redknapp, hanging out of a car window talking up all the players he's eyeing up but "he doesn't talk about other teams' players". They're angry he isn't dropping everything to pursue a player they like without even thinking about the player he could get.
Wenger is good enough to lead Arsenal to the title and I'm sure he's a wonderful dancer but I'll tell you what Wenger isn't good enough at. He's not good at keeping people who don't need to know informed on things that are on a need to know basis. In fact he is absolutely shit at it. He's terrible at not keeping a secret. He's the worst person ever for not divulging his plan to Liam from the North Bank, Sully with his two season tickets, Alice who goes to all the away game and Barry from the pub. What an arsehole.
