A one, a two, a one, two, three, four… [The intro abruptly starts]
What is this new Arsenal that we see right now? It seems to me like a coalescing of both Wenger eras, by which I mean the steely ‘Invincible’ period of the past, and the more current era of technicality across the pitch. It's almost comparable to musical clash between heavy metal vs. Mozart; a loud thumping sound, with an underlying smooth melody that makes a hostage of your senses, in some ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ kind of way.
19 years ago, back in 1996, Arsène Wenger was appointed manager of Arsenal. His anniversary with Arsenal was a day of reflection for many fans so I thought I'd write a piece about what I think of our season so far. I've managed to keep my patience so far… well at least I had until Olympiakos. We are a fabulous bunch of losers, aren't we? Perhaps what everybody thinks is actually the truth. Or maybe not, maybe we're just unlucky.
Sir Stanley Matthews, the King Of Dribble, was one of England's greatest ever players and perhaps the finest winger, or wide midfielder that ever graced a football pitch.
Of course, in his era his position was known as 'outside right', which is perhaps the appropriate term for what I intend to write about in this piece. You see it is the decline of the wide midfielder that I wish to explore.
I saw an interesting blog recently, I forget the author, but their thoughts were much aligned with my own in terms of our international side and set-up.
Now I am no great fan of Roy Hodgson but he has done well, qualifying for the Euros next year and doing it before everybody else. Not only that but winning 8 from 8 and scoring 26 goals along the way and conceding just 3. Pretty good right? Well, yeah but when you look at the group we were in anything else would've been a horrendous failure, so let's not get too excited.
